Step away from the neon buzz and pass beneath the torii gate — the air changes. Welcome to Hanazono Shrine, the guardian shrine of Shinjuku. Before the shrine hall glowing in lantern light, we'll teach you, in English, the meaning of "two bows, two claps, one bow" and the proper etiquette for worship. With your newly learned phrases, show the traveler beside you: "This is how you pray."

After paying your respects, head into Golden Gai, the deep back-alley maze packed with 280 tiny bars. You'll hop between three carefully chosen bars (cover charge and three drinks included).
