While still in Tokyo, you suddenly find yourself wandering into a back street of Kyoto. Kagurazaka, the "Little Kyoto" of Shinjuku Ward, is just such a neighborhood. Visit two shrines with contrasting characters — the venerable Bishamon-ten, long revered by locals, and the modern Akagi Shrine — then set off along cobblestone slopes and narrow alleys. Around every corner, a ryotei's black fence or a small stairway appears, turning the simple act of getting lost into a pleasure in itself. When your legs grow tired, slip into a hidden café tucked down a side alley. Settle in with sweets and a drink (included in the price), and the scenery you just admired slowly settles into a travel memory. This is a strolling tour for grown-ups — an experience you won't find amid the crowds of typical tourist spots.
JR Iidabashi Station, West Exit.
