We believe the essence of Wa-shitsu (the Japanese room) is not in the materials of tatami or shoji but in "ma" — the considered space between things. Lower the furniture; lower the eye; soften the light through washi. With those moves alone, a Western room can carry the spirit of Wa. Wa-Shitsu Atelier works directly with shrine carpenters, sashimono makers, and tatami artisans to bring Wa-furniture that integrates into modern life.
